I am nothing more than a Heretic. I have defied my King and tried to have him killed. This is my story.
I look out at the image before me. Night has fallen, and the field looks almost haunted. The moon overhead provided the only light anywhere. I hold my sword up into the sky and I see its reflection as clear as I ever had before. Tonight is the night. I will accept my fate. Over the top of the mountain, I see the ring of smoke. I laugh at myself at how I've never noticed it's entrapment before. Everything seemed to have more meaning at the end. The ground upon which I stand. The night sky in front of me. The castle that lay before me. Everything held significance. Nothing was meaningless. A faint noise can be heard from behind me. I wish to look, but I force myself to stay focused. I hear the voices from behind me yelling. Their hearts filled with hatred and ignorance. At least, from where I'm standing. "DOWN WITH THE HERETIC! LAY HIS EVIL HEART DOWN TO REST!"
Heretic? Me? Those poor souls... If only they knew... I slowly turned around and faced the approaching crowd. I clenshed my sword tightly as they got closer and closer. I could make out about 40 or so people approaching, each holding a torch. I got the feeling that they weren't going to be used for light. "Young warrior. Relinquish your weapon." Without turning around, I dropped my sword and lowered my head. I knew the voice which spoke to me. I said in a soft voice,
"I used to idolize you..." He spoke nothing as he picked up my sword. A light wind began to blow.
"Nobody said you had to stop," he replied eventually. His voice gave off multiple feelings. It was filled with hate, rage, anger, disappointment, and sadness. I heard his footsteps in the grass slowly walking away,
"Actions speak louder than words," I said, again with a low tone. I heard his footsteps stop for a moment, then resume. I assumed he was he was heading for the castle. I looked again at the approaching crowd. The had almost arrived. Only one hill they had to pass over. Their voices pierced my soul.
"How dare you lie about the King? You betrayed your land! You will burn in eternal hellfire!" I pitied their existence. They lived under a false king, a blind princess, and a false hero. The people were blind to the truth. I attempted to tell them, but you cannot change ignorance... I was about to die for a meaningless cause. I was about to die... because I tried to save a land...
I slowly walked up to my room in the castle. Everything seemed to give off an evil aura. From the paintings of the princess to the guards at their posts. What if we're wrong? What if he truly has the proof he claimed he had? I quickly shrugged off these thoughts immediately end entered my door. I saw a note on my desk and picked it up. I began to read the words it said...
"Hero. I write these words to you out of concern. My name is of no importance right now. If you're reading this, then I am awaiting my execution in Hyrule Field as we speak, and we have probably already spoken. Those words will be my last to you. I have faith in you, Hero. I have faith that you're not corrupt. I have faith you'll follow my words. Please. It is my last wish. If you truly are a Hero, then give me my last chance..."
The note cut off there. I searched around my room to find any other fragment of the note that might have been torn off, but to no avail. My thoughts wandered as I thought about what might have finished the note. Is he right? How am I to know? I must stop the execution... but... will I be labeled as a heretic myself? No... I musn't think like that. I must do what is right for Hyrule. "Anyone who threatens our King will be punished." At that time, a guard walked in curious of the noise.
"Hero. Is everything ok in here?" he asked. I nodded and let him on my way. At that time, I noticed the painting of the legendary Fierce Deity, a spirit trapped within a mask. Something about it caught my eye. I walked over to the painting and closely examined it.
"Heretic. Do you have any final words before your execution?" I stared the guard in the eyes. His gaze was filled with hate, as was my own.
"I wish to see the Princess," I stated, not deterring my gaze. The guard nodded and the Princess, Zelda, stepped forward.
"Heretic. What is your final wish?" she stated. Her voice softer than anyone's at the time. I got the feeling that she wasn't sure what to think about the whole situation.
"Tell me. Who is your father?" I asked. My gaze attempting to pierce her heart.
"My father is the ruler of Hyrule," she responded.
"True. But that is not my question. What kind of a man is he?"
"A great man. A man who will lead his people into prosperity!"
"Would he die for his people?"
"Of course he would. He lives for his land." I looked at the crowd surrounding me. Each and every one of them had their torches pointed at me, all ready to burn me alive. I stood my ground, however. The only restraint binding me to my position being pride. I then picked out a random person from the crowd.
"Have you ever met the King?"
"No, I haven't... But that's besides the point! He's a great..." The villager protested. I quickly intervened.
"Thank you. You three over there. Have you met the King?" The three shook their heads. I chuckled to myself.
"What is so funny?" The Princess demanded.
"You say your father would die for his people, yet none of these people have met him before! What kind of king does not see his own people?" The crowd became silent. "Can any of you tell me? Would a king who never addresses his people truly die for them?" Small conversation could be heard in hushed tones from the crowd. Then the Princess spoke up.
"Who was it that created this town? Who is it that commands the armies of Hyrule? Who is it that keeps Hyrule safe from harm?" The crowd became angry once again. However, I once again replied, without stirring a bit.
"The People. The people built this town. The people command our armies. The people protect us. The king has done nothing."
"Do not believe this heretic. He speaks nothing but lies!"
"This comes from one who is blind to the truth." I smirked as she slapped her hand across my face.
"Burn this heretic to the bone. Send his soul into eternal damnation!" The crowd slowly approached me with their torches, but I was not done. I had one final thing to say...
"Princess. What happened to your Triforce of Wisdom?"
No. It cannot be true. The writing on the paper. The clues. No. I refuse to believe it! I rushed to the tower window and watched the conflict in the field. That man... He speaks the truth... And he will be burned for it... I quickly turned around and headed for the King's Chambers. Some guards tried to stop me, but I pushed them aside and burst through the doors. I feared the worst as the doors closed tightly behind me. The Triforce of Courage suddenly appeared before me. As well as the Triforce of Wisdom. My eyes widened with fear as I saw the King stand before me. "Hero... Why do you intrude in my quarters?"
The Princess was speechless. "How... did you know? ANSWER ME!!!" I stayed silent with a grin on my face as I looked toward the town.
"If I am to be punished for my sins, then I suggest you begin the torture now," I stated. I heard the villagers clamoring as they approached with their torches. Just then, a messenger pushed his way through the crowd.
"Princess! The Hero! He's been murdered!" he exclaimed. The Princess had a blank look on her face. His name was running through her head. It was pitifully obvious. I felt the heat as my clothes began to catch fire from the torches. The pain was immense, but still, I held my ground. I was facing the castle now, and I could see a figure standing on top of the castle, and a golden light was near it. A tear fell from my eye as I fell to the ground. My body was now completely engulfed in fire, and I no longer had the energy to bear it. I let out a large cry of pain. The Princess watched in hatred at me. I slowly began to speak my final words in the land of the living.
"You've doomed your land. Death and Destruction will now rule, and this time, a hero won't be able to save you." It is unknown to me if she was able to hear. Everything slowly began fading to black. I no longer felt the pain of the fire burning me alive. The last sight I saw was a golden light emanating over the land followed by a scream of absolute fear.
This is my story. The story of a heretic. One who tried to save an entire land.
